LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials with the Kentucky State Police say the incident began as a verbal altercation and quickly escalated.

“Initial investigation indicates that a verbal altercation took place," Trooper Matt Gayheart said. "At some point, it become physical, and at that point, led to the shooting.”

Gayheart said that while they deal with crime on a daily basis, they do not see situations such as this on a regular basis.

“We are a small town so any time something like this takes place, it does take us back a little bit," Gayheart said. "It’s a little troubling, we don’t usually have to deal with situations like this.”

Despite the situation, Gayheart says that the safety of all involved is their top priority.

“That’s what we’re here to do," Gayheart said. "We’re here to serve the people, whatever capacity that may be. We will do it to the best of our abilities.”
