LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK offensive line coach John Schlarman died Thursday after battling cancer since the summer of 2018.

Wildcats' football coach Mark Stoops addressed the media with a commitment to continue the legacy Schlarman leaves behind.

“John was so well respected throughout the country and in our community and it’s hard to state the impact that he had on myself, our staff, and our kids. We so greatly appreciate John and all the work that he did here and more importantly the man that he was and the legacy that he leaves. We will work extremely hard to honor his legacy for many years to come. We’re gonna go out and we’re gonna honor John and one thing about John, I bet that everybody will tell you, was that he was here with a strong positive attitude every day he could. He essentially came in here and worked and coached until it was the bitter end for him. We’re gonna honor him by by doing what John would do. What would John want to do? John would pick up and he’d come to work and he put a smile on his face, even when he was struggling, and he would work. The best way we can honor him is just go out there and play the very best we can.”
