Victim identified in deadly crash near Rupp Arena
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - One person was killed and another person was injured in a crash early Friday morning in Lexington.
The crash happened on West High Street near Oliver Lewis Way just before 3 a.m. Friday.
Police said two men were in a car that struck a metal utility pole. One of the men, identified as 20-year-old Ralph Hirwa, died as a result of the crash. The Fayette County coroner says Hirwa was the passenger of the vehicle. The other man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The impact of the crash created a lot of debris. One officer told WKYT the crash was one of the worst he’s seen.
Helene Steene is the President of the Woodward Heights Historic Neighborhood Association and she was just one of a number of people who told us stories about the crashes they’ve seen just like the one Friday morning.
“There’ve been lots and lots of accidents, hitting houses, and several deaths,” said Steene. “And other houses here have been hit in the bushes or the sidewalks or the trashcans. They don’t want to walk dogs here on this street because it’s scary. I mean, I don’t walk the street either.”
Police say their investigation is continuing but they can’t say how fast the car was going or if drugs and alcohol played a role. Steene says that something has to change.
“We have a speed reader here right now and sometimes we stand and watch,” Steene said. “It’s 25 miles per hour. It’s 40 miles an hour, 50 miles an hour, they don’t even step on the break light.”
High Street was closed for hours while crews worked the scene. The road has since reopened.
