Stoops, coordinators talk UK football at Kickoff Luncheon
Wildcats open season on Sept. 4
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, along with coordinators Liam Coen and Brad White, spent the better part of an hour on Wednesday addressing fans and boosters at the annual Kickoff Luncheon at Kroger Field.
Stoops, entering his ninth season as head coach in Lexington, applauded his players for fighting through a difficult 2020 season.
“There were some who packed it in, but our team certainly did not do that,” Stoops said.
Much of the preseason talk is centered around who will start at quarterback. New offensive coordinator Liam Coen says it will be the guy who can “run the operation.”
“The type of guy that really rallies the players, and whoever the team really wants to play with and can make plays in competitive situations, that’s ultimately who coach Stoops and I will talk about being the starting quarterback,” Coen said.
“I think we have a vision in terms of what we’re trying to get accomplished at the position, and at the end of the day, who can run the operation and the whole show the best will ultimately play,” Coen added.
Defensively, the Wildcats will be experienced, returning 10 seniors. White noted UK will always be detailed in fundamentals and assignment sound.
“We’ve got guys who’ve been in this system now for three and four years,” White said. “They know the basics. They know the standards. They know what to expect. So now it’s about taking it to another level.”
The Cats open the season at Kroger Field on Sept. 4, when they host the Univ. of Louisiana at Monroe.
