LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Masks will be optional for Fayette County Public Schools starting Tuesday, March 15.

Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins made the decision Monday. For many this feels like it’s been a long time coming.

“I’m just so excited that 40 plus thousand Kentucky kids get to have that choice tomorrow should they choose. And if they don’t choose and they want to continue to wear their mask, that’s perfectly fine, too,” said Dawne Perkins with Let Them Learn group.

“I’m sitting here getting emotional and it’s just because I’m that happy that something as little as that is finally going to happen for us parents,” parent Lisa Norris said.

Dr. Liggins made the announcement many have been waiting for. Masks are now optional in Fayette County Public Schools buildings and buses.

“There’s some families that are still very uneasy about being unmasked and they’re uneasy about having people around them unmasked. The same for our staff,” Dr. Liggins said.

Dr. Liggins says the district will now be operating under the “Either way, it’s okay” campaign.

“Families are very concerned about their medically fragile child or medically fragile family members. And I’ve heard from those who are ready to stop wearing masks all together. They’re just sick of it and over the mandate,” Dr. Liggins said.

The intention is to create an environment built around respecting each other’s choices regarding whether they want to wear a mask or not. Something mask optional proponents like Perkins and Norris can fully get behind.

“It almost has me in tears to be honest. I’m just so happy for the people,” Perkins said.

“I can’t even explain it. The sense of calm that has come over me, and happiness and joy to hear that is just astounding really,” Norris said.

The district will also lift all COVID-19 restrictions on school visitors and volunteers beginning on Monday.
