LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A forum on electricity bills, rates and initiatives coming to the area that could affect utilities aimed to provide clear and reliable information Thursday night.

Jenna Rector, with Bluegrass Greensource, said that Kentucky is trending back toward using more coal while using it in new ways.

“In the last five years or so, kind of transitioned a little bit from coal more towards natural gas, but we’re seeing a shift back to coal, kind of firing back those old coal plants and making a lot of renovations to make them more efficient as well as more environmentally conscious, so it’s interesting to see that,” Rector said.

Rector also said finding renewable sources is a priority.

“It’s also interesting to see the rise in electricity and energy demand, so we’re looking for reliable sources, but also looking into renewable sources like solar and battery storage research,” she said.
