Barbara Bailey Cowden is a native of Harlan, Kentucky, and a proud Harlan High School Green Dragon.
Her first job in journalism was as staff reporter for her hometown newspaper, The Harlan Daily Enterprise. Under the guidance of then Enterprise Editor, the late Ewell Balltrip, she discovered her passion for journalism. After her first byline in the Harlan Daily, she knew that she had found her desired career path.
Barbara is a University of Kentucky graduate who bleeds blue. She welcomes the opportunity to get back on campus when she can, speaking to journalism classes and meeting with students.
Along the way, Barbara also taught journalism at UK and Asbury University.
She began working at WKYT in 1979, never realizing it would be a career of 40+ years. She currently coanchors WKYT Midmorning, and WKYT with Bill Bryant.
During her tenure at WKYT, Barbara has worked as a reporter, anchor, producer and weather person in virtually every time slot. She's worked early mornings, late nights, weekends and now, dayside.
She's been active in the community with organizations including Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of the Bluegrass, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of America, Ronald McDonald House board, Center for Women, Children and Families, Junior League of Lexington, Alzheimer's Association board, Kidney Foundation of Central Kentucky board, American Heart Association board, Kentucky Tomorrow, Lexington Chamber, Chi Omega Advisory board, and worked on the PTO boards at Christ the King School and Lexington Catholic when her children attended those schools.
Barbara has been honored by the Associated Press for her anchoring and reporting.
She was inducted into the Kentucky Broadcasting Hall of Fame, and honored as a distinguished alumna of the University of Kentucky School of Journalism. She will be inducted into the UK Journalism Hall of Fame this fall.
Barbara is married to Roger Cowden. They have two children, Courtney Woomer and Clark Cowden, and two grandchildren, Callie and Caroline Woomer.
