I was born and raised in Lexington, KY and my love for the Bluegrass State runs deep. Attending UK sporting events growing up sparked my passion for sports, and I’m so happy to be home.
After graduating from Dunbar in 2017 (along with some of the Sweet-Sixteen-winning Bulldogs) I headed south to Louisiana State University. I received my degree from the Manship School of Mass Communication in three and a half years. While in Baton Rouge, I covered the 2019 National Championship football team as well as top-ranked gymnastics, baseball, basketball and volleyball. Covering the National Championship run, Joe Burrow’s Heisman Trophy win and the record-setting offense are memories I’ll cherish forever. I served as a Sports Anchor and Producer for LSU’s award-winning student station, Tiger TV, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Thanks to the university I had the opportunity to work with CBS Sports and ESPN.
In the summer of 2018, I interned for Kentucky Sports Radio and carried out the #KSR120 campaign, seeing 60 of Kentucky’s counties in three weeks. This “tour” reinforced my love for this state and allowed me to see far beyond Fayette County. It was clear that once my time in Louisiana was over, I had to return home.
I was diagnosed with an aggressive strain of thyroid cancer in the summer of 2015, just weeks after my seventeenth birthday. After several rounds of treatment and multiple surgeries, I am living healthy thanks to the UK’s Markey Cancer Center team. Following the July 2022 EKY flooding, my inaugural Cocktails for Cancer benefit raised $3.1k for flood victims and the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association.
Coming home to Kentucky is a dream. While I’m a city girl, I am eager to learn more about the mountain region and all the schools that make it unique. Joining the team and brand of Sports Overtime is surreal, and you’ll always find me counting down the days until football season. I cannot wait to tell the sports stories that come out of the mountains and join the WYMT Family. Drop a line with any story ideas to courtneylayne.brewer@wymt.com
