Appalachia Rises: Hope, Healing, Recovery

In Whitesburg, flooding took with it Appalachian history stored in an iconic building known as Appalshop.

Over the next hour, we are taking a look at how the region is recovering after last year’s historic and deadly floods.

In Knott County, the town of Hindman was covered in water after the flooding in July 2022. Twenty-one people in the county died. Many people there are still recovering.

For the Lost Creek community of Breathitt County, hope never disappeared. Some schools were just weeks away from the fall 2022 session. Riverside Christian School was just one of those affected. Their building couldn’t beat the storm, but it didn’t stop them from helping their students and staff.
