BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - Two retired Kentucky State Police troopers are being called in to investigate multiple unsolved crimes in the Bardstown area.

Each of the crimes involves murder, a suspicious death, or a presumed death.

They will investigate:

  • the May 2013 killing of Officer Jason Ellis, who was ambushed on a ramp off of the Bluegrass Parkway

  • the April 2014 killings of Kathy Netherland and her daughter Samantha, who were found murdered inside of their home

  • the July 2015 disappearance of Crystal Rogers

  • the November 2016 killing of Crystal Rogers' father, Tommy Ballard, who was shot and killed while out hunting on family property

"This is a unique thing that [Kentucky State Police] Commissioner [Rick] Sanders is doing. He is leading the way with this decision, it is an unprecedented thing that we are doing to try and solve these cases. We are just looking for a break," KSP Lt. Michael Webb said.

Officials say the two troopers are working full-time, clocking 40 hours a week on these particular cases.
