On the second Saturday in May since 1993, United States Postal Service letter carriers ask for the community's support for the nation's largest single-day food drive.

Participation in this food drive is easy. On Saturday, May 13th Lexington residents are asked to place their non-perishable food item donations in a bag and leave it on their doorstep. Lexington mail carriers will pick up these donations which will then be delivered to local food banks.

The timing of this event is crucial for non-profits who receive the majority of their donations during the holiday season. But, as Misty Simms with God's Pantry Food Bank explains, hunger is a year round issue.

"With summer fast approaching and school getting out we notice a lot of families coming in because kids are home and they need breakfast and lunch during this time, not just dinner," said Simms.

Last year's event broke the world record for the largest single-day food drive, collecting 80 million pounds of food. Organizers are hoping to top that number this year.
