Thousands of families needing help paying for upcoming energy bills can apply for assistance Monday.

The Community Action Council is taking applications for its federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.

The program provides a one-time benefit to eligible households to use toward energy bills.

The amount of the benefit is determined by income, household size, fuel type and geographic location.

In 2017 the Council's LIHEAP Subsidy program served more than 2,900 households and spent $333,462 to help keep families warm.

To apply, applicants must bring the following:

  • 1. Proof of Social Security number for each member of the household.
  • 2. Proof of income for the previous month for all adults 18 and older in the household.
  • 3. Most recent heating bill or verification from a landlord that heating expenses are included in rent.
  • 4. Birth dates of all household members.
  • 5. Photo identification of the applicant.

Anyone at risk of losing their heat due to inability to pay should immediately contact one of the Council's seven centers in Lexington-Fayette, Bourbon, Harrison and Nicholas counties.
