BEREA, Ky. (WKYT) - The gymnasium of Silver Creek Elementary in Berea was a sea of red, white, and blue as students honored the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the nation's Armed Forces.

Student had the chance to introduce their family members who are veterans. But for one student, this ceremony ended with a surprise for her.

Brooklyn hasn't seen her dad in about three months. She was excited when during Friday's ceremony she got a surprise phone call from her father. But, the school had a much bigger surprise in store for the first-grader.

Staff Sergeant Travis Cox managed to sneak off the phone and into the very gym where his daughter stood. When school officials had Brooklyn turn around to look at the rest of the people in the gym, she couldn't believe who was standing there.

"Daddy!" The bear hug that ensued brought emotion to almost everyone who watched.

Cox says keeping the plan a secret was tough.

"My wife and I, we would talk about it on the phone, but we had to make sure certain individuals were not around, so it was difficult."

But in the end, it was all worth it.

"I almost cried, I'll be honest," he said. "It was a good feeling just to be able to see and visit her."

As for Brooklyn, she says the first thing she plans on doing now that her dad is home... "Eat ice cream!!!"

Sergeant Cox says he'll get to spend a few days with his family before heading back to his post in Virginia Beach.
