A middle school basketball game in Pike County got heated on Thursday night when a brawl broke out on the court. Investigators say one of the coaches was involved in the fight.

Pike County Superintendent Reed Adkins says he spent much of the day Friday trying to figure out just what exactly happened to start that fight at the game between Belfry and Phelps. Adkins is a former grade-school basketball coach who says he's never had to deal with something like that before.

Cell phone video captured inside the gym shows the chaos on the court, quickly spiraling out of control and spilling over from the sideline. At one point someone charges and tackles another person at mid-court.

Adkins says at least one coach was involved in the fight.

"It's a real unfortunate situation. We don't want these types of things going on in our school system," Adkins said. "I will say there will be penalties handed down. We certainly will not tolerate this kind of behavior in our school system."

Adkins also says one person was taken to the emergency room after the fight, but the superintendent met with that person and he or she should be OK.

Now the school board's attorney is involved as they try to figure out what started the brawl.
