Kentucky State Police are investigating an accidental shooting in Bell County involving two children.

Troopers say it happened around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night at a home in the Blackmont area on Highway 72.

They say an 11-year-old boy was playing with a handgun, when he accidentally shot his 6-year-old sister. He then walked to his grandparents' house next door, who called 911.

The girl was first taken to the Middlesboro hospital and was later flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. They say she was alert and talking when she was taken to the hospital.

Police say the children's parents were not home at the time, and the boy found the gun, which was not locked up, in his parents' bedroom. Troopers say there was more than one gun in the bedroom, and they were easily accessible.

The parents are not facing any charges at this time.
