Coroner: Deadly KSP-involved shooting in Rowan County
Kentucky State Police is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Rowan County.
KSP says in a news release that the victim is Matthew Brewer, 22, of Morehead. The incident happened on Old Hilda Road, which is just north of Morehead and just off of Kentucky 32.
State Police says the trooper, Michael Armstrong, was serving an arrest warrant out of Madison County to Brewer when he ran into his home. Troopers say the warrant was on charges of reporting a false incident, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of marijuana, and having an open container.
State Police say when Brewer ran inside his home, he pointed a gun at the trooper. That is when, according to police, Trooper Armstrong shot and killed him.
Police say Armstrong was not injured in the shooting.
Friends of Brewer tell WKYT that he was loved to hunt and loved to ride dirt bikes.
"He will be remembered as a good man, loving. We all have our problems, but he was a good man," Stormy Bowens told WKYT.
Both friends and neighbors in the area say allegations of pointing a gun at an officer does not necessarily sound like something Brewer would do.
"Really shocking. Really shocking to happen so close to home and someone you know so well and it really is just a shame for everyone involved," Wesley Williams said.
Neighbors say Brewer lived at the home with his mother and other family members.
State Police are still investigating the shooting.
