LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A child has died after falling into a pond at the Lexington Cemetery.
The Fayette County Coroner's Office says D'Shannon Davis, 11, died Sunday evening.
Lexington Police told WKYT that D'Shannon, a five-year-old and an eight-year-old cut through Cove Haven Cemetery on Ash Street to get inside the Lexington Cemetery Sunday night. Police believe the three of them were fishing at the pond.
Lexington firefighters at the scene say D'Shannon fell into the pond and was in seven to eight feet of water for about 30 minutes. A groundskeeper called 911. She tells WKYT that two children had fishing line wrapped around their legs when they ran for help.
D'Shannon was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.
Monday morning, the Fayette County Coroner's Office confirmed to WKYT D'Shannon died.
Fayette County Public School officials say D'Shannon would have started 6th grade this week at Leestown Middle School. He attended elementary school at Booker T. Washington.
The school system will have crisis counselors at both schools for his classmates and teachers who need help dealing with his death.
This was the second time in a week someone fell into the pond at Lexington Cemetery. Last Sunday, a man died after falling into the pond.
Cove Haven's manager says children cut through their cemetery all the time, especially to get to Lexington Cemetery. She's pleading with parents to keep an eye on their kids to prevent these tragedies.
