LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Fayette County Public Schools will close Friday for a teacher rally in Frankfort.
The school system is one of the largest in Kentucky. It follows other school districts, including Scott and Garrard County, which also announced it would close.
“Our teachers and support staff have answered the call to advocate for students by encouraging our lawmakers to fully fund education and invest in school safety and mental health services,” FCPS Superintendent Manny Caulk said. “I have heard from many of them who want to continue that effort by going to Frankfort on Friday.”
The district says students and family who rely on food backpack programs will receive services Thursday.
Individual schools will make decisions on after-school student activities.
Other school districts, like Madison County, are opting to remain open while sending a delegation.
Caulk will ask the school board to waive the day for students, as they will still receive more instructional hours than the law requires.
