In the last week in Central Kentucky, there have been at least four accidents involving campers. Two of them, the campers came loose from the vehicles that were towing them.

One of the accidents resulted in a fatality.

WKYT News Reporter Monique Blair spoke with Bluegrass RV Technician Jack Crowe about the safety measures a camper owner should take before hitting the road.

“Have your bearings greased, your brakes checked on it. You know just regular maintenance on it,” Crowe said.

Crowe says every vehicle has a certain weight limit that it can tow.

“Any manufacturer puts the sticker on the door telling the maximum weight allowed for that vehicle. All the trailers are labeled with the sticker as well,” Crowe said.

When it comes to attaching a trailer to a hitch, there are several steps that must be taken. Crowe says he makes sure to walk every customer through those steps until they feel confident doing it on their own.

“I try to make sure they’re safe as possible before I let them leave that gate,” Crowe said, ““I don’t know why you would want to skip any of the stages on it because then you’re putting yourself in danger as well as everyone else.”
