SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT) - Police are investigating a death after they found a 70-year-old woman dead inside a church fellowship hall.

Police say they found Ruthie Carolyn New, 70, in the fellowship hall at Denham Street Baptist Church in Somerset.

The pastor of the church found her body around 3:40 p.m. Relatives filed a missing person report 30 minutes earlier.

Family members say New was the widow of the former pastor at this church and a charter member.

We are told she also cleaned the church on Thursdays, and that's what they believe she was doing at the church before her death.

"It's a tightly knit church, tightly knit community. You just want to pray for them pray for the family and pray for this entire community that's been affected by this. It's a sad situation," said Somerset Police Department PIO, Mike Correll.

Police say they are investigating New's death as a homicide. Investigators are not releasing the cause or manner of death because they say that information is crucial to their case.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Frankfort.
