Lexington church hopes to feed 3,500 children in Haiti

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) Hundreds of volunteers gathered Saturday morning at Southland Christian Church's Lexington and Danville campuses for the annual Hope for Haiti event. Partnering with Institution Unity, volunteers put together boxes of food, which will then be delivered to those in need in Haiti.

This year, event organizers plan to put together one million meals, which will help feed 3,500 children in Haiti. According to Hugues Bastien, the founder and director of Institution Unity, these meals help kids grow strong as well as grow better in their education.

"If I could just show you pictures of those kids eating and how happy they are having to received that meal," said Bastien. "Every time we ring that bell for the kids to go to recess, it's just a blessed moment how excited they feel knowing they're going to get a hot meal."

Southland will also be sending volunteers throughout the year to Haiti to aid in handing out the meals they have prepared for the children.
