Southbound I-75 was down to one lane near the Clays Ferry Bridge Saturday as firefighters cleared the scene after a vehicle caught fire.

The fire was called in around 12:45 p.m. Police say a vehicle caught fire in the center lane of the bridge. The occupants were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported among firefighters.

The scene completely shut down I-75 southbound at the 99 mile marker for a short time, but one lane has been restored. This is still creating a major traffic impact, with cars backed up about 5 miles along the interstate. Drivers are advised to avoid the area if at all possible.

Hazmat teams are now en route to the scene to investigate for any leaking fuel or other hazards at the scene. Police expect the interstate to remain down to one lane for another couple of hours.

No word at this time what may have started the fire.

The roadway was reopened around 2:35 p.m.
