Jim Caldwell’s Forecast | The Storm has arrived

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - After a week of preparing, the winter storm is finally here!

This will be quite the day for rapid change! The morning hours have 50s and rain and the evening hours will push snow, sleet and freezing rain into Kentucky. Quite different from what we dealt with during the morning hours. Let’s simplify this again for you.

This Afternoon
The change from rain to freezing rain and sleet begins. It is this time period that will either cut eventual snow totals or help them out. The longer we have sleet and freezing rain, the lower the snow totals. I think we end up with a tenth of an inch to maybe a quarter of an inch of ice. If those numbers end up higher the snow is lower! Simple!

Snow. The complete switch happens and it could get interesting. Winds will pick up
and the flakes will be flying across Kentucky. If we can get the rate of the snow up... you could see white-out conditions! Might see those anyway with that kind of wind. I think we end up with 4"-8” of in central Kentucky with less in eastern Kentucky. Those totals probably run around 1-3" near the Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia border. The greater the distance between us and the mountains, the higher the totals will be from this system.

This will be a wild one! Stay with us all day for the very latest!

And one more thing... Monday-Tuesday’s system looks like it will be another snow maker. So the fun and games of winter are here!
