HICKMAN, Ky. (WKYT) - A police officer in Fulton County who had been reported missing has been found dead.

Kentucky State Police say they were notified around 9:15 p.m. (CST) Friday that a Hickman police officer was missing and was possibly in a flooded field.

Search and rescue teams and various agencies from both Kentucky and Tennessee searched throughout the night for the officer.

Troopers say around 5 a.m. (CST) Saturday, crews located the body of 45-year-old Officer Rodney S. Smith in a flooded field off Bernal Avenue in Hickman. Officer Smith's cruiser was also located.

Officer Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fulton County coroner. His body is being taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

According to the Supporting Heroes organization, Officer Smith had only been a Hickman police officer for six months, and had just moved his family to the area on Friday.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Jody Cash told the Associated Press that a death investigation is underway, but there are no signs of foul play.

WPSD-TV reports that the coroner says preliminary autopsy reports show Officer Smith died from drowning.
