A massive fire destroyed a barn at a Lexington horse farm Friday.

The fire started around 4 a.m. at Dixiana Farm on Dixiana Domino Road, off Russell Cave Road.

People at the farm say a worker who lives on the property found the barn engulfed in flames after he heard loud crackling and popping, before calling 911.

Firefighters say the barn had already collapsed by the time they got there so their focus turned to protecting nearby buildings.

Workers at the farm say the owners are currently out of town.

They say the barn housed straw and hay, as well as a tractor and SUV.

They estimate the loss to be at least $20,000.

No animals were inside and there were no injuries.

Because of the amount of straw involved crews were on scene for several hours after the fire to keep an eye on things as it all burns itself out.
