LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington police are searching for a bank robbery suspect.

Police say the robbery occurred around 9:15 a.m. at a Central Bank branch on 515 West New Circle Road. Investigators say the suspect was armed and drove away in a red van.

Officers say the suspect crashed the van into a building on Colesbury Circle after the robbery happened. The crash happened just blocks away from original scene. Police found cash on the ground next to the crashed vehicle.

The man would escape from the crash scene. Officers then found a person of interest and three others in another vehicle. The person of interest ran away from that scene, but the three others that were with him were detained. The suspect would then get in a vehicle, travel on the interstate, abandon the vehicle and run away once again.

Fayette County Public Schools said Dixie Elementary School and Crawford Middle School are on heightened alert as a result of the investigation. Students will be kept inside the building during this time. Students are conducting state testing today, and school leaders say the campuses are safe as police search in nearby neighborhoods.

Police are working to get surveillance video.
