Lexington police spread holiday cheer during 'Shop with a Cop'

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) Saturday Lexington police headed to Meijer on Reynolds Road to assist kids with holiday shopping.

"It's all through donations that we can have this wonderful interaction and this great experience with these kids and be able to give back," said Sgt. Jeremiah Davis.

The annual 'Shop with a Cop' event paired police with underprivileged children whose Christmas may not have been so bright.

"You can just look around and see the smiles," said Davis.

Over 200 children each received a $150 Meijer gift card to buy presents for themselves and their families.

The Bledsoe brothers, ages 7 and 8, told WKYT they bought toys, and used some of their money to purchase flowers and Yankee candles for their mom.

"Typically we encounter people on the worst day of their life. By giving back to the community, you get to see the good, you get to see the joy, you get to see the cheer," said Davis.

Business sponsors and members of the community donated over $35,000 to the event.
