LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington public housing is going smoke-free.

In accordance with regulations set by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the use of tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, pipes and hookah will not be allowed within 25 feet of Lexington Housing Authority (LHA) units.

The new policy will take effect July 31, 2018. All current and incoming leaseholders will be required to sign a lease addendum agreeing to the policy.

Leases may also be terminated, and tenants evicted, if residents are found to be in violation of the policy too many times.

The policies will also take effect in common areas like administrative offices, community centers, day care centers and laundry centers.
