LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Matt King was a farmer in Breathitt County when he was drafted into World War II in 1943. It was in the Navy where he served on the same flight deck as future President George H.W. Bush.
King’s daughter Peggy Jones says during his life, he never missed an opportunity to talk about his shipmate and their time at sea together.
"He did talk about seeing the pilots and seeing George Bush out on the flight deck,” said Jones. “When George Bush won the Presidency my dad was very pleased and talked about what a good man he was."
Matt King kept just about everything from his time in the Navy. From a Thanksgiving Day menu, to the certificate he received for crossing the equator.
He even kept the ship newsletter detailing Bush’s plane crash and recovery. Jones say her father’s experiences aboard that ship shaped how he viewed the future President.
“He really loved talking about it even as he got older,” Jones said.
Jones said the collection of her father’s keepsakes is one of her most prized possessions.
