WKYT has learned that a man killed in a massacre in an Orlando nightclub has Kentucky ties.

Darryl Roman Burt, II grew up in Kentucky. His family spent several years living in the Georgetown area before moving to another state. Burt was currently living in Jacksonville.

"When I learned DJ was one of the people killed, it really put a face on the tragedy for me. It was just awful," explained Kathy Owens. Owens was Burt's ninth grade teacher at Scott County.

Just hours before the shooting Burt was at his graduation ceremony for completing his masters degree.

Prior to the shooting, Burt was working at Keiser University in Jacksonville as a Financial Aid Officer, working with the school's military students.

A 29-year-old leaving a legacy of compassion and hard work, all things Owens says he exemplified as a young student in her classroom.

"You just knew he was one of those people that was going to be successful in whatever he did. He had people skills, he was engaging with others, and he was willing to work hard. Those things will get you where you want to go," said Owens.

The life of a young man with a promising future cut far too short, however in that time leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him including those in central Kentucky.

"He was just a great kid. I am really glad I was a part of his journey along the way ... that I got to know DJ while he was on his path," said Owens.

Burt's family moved during his high school years, he graduated from an Indiana high school in 2005.

A vigil is planned for Burt this Saturday evening at six o’clock on the courthouse steps in Georgetown.
