A Marshall County couple pleaded guilty to criminal charges connected to an investigation by the Kentucky Department of Insurance's Division of Insurance Fraud Investigation.
Filbeck-Cann & King Funeral Home owners Tim and Becky King were charged with fraudulent insurance acts, theft by unlawful taking and criminal possession of a forged instrument.
The DOI began investigating allegations that unlicensed individuals had been selling life insurance policies as burial pre-arrangements. Officials claim that while the funeral home had a licensed insurance agent, the Kings forged that agent's name on documents and sold policies. The department also reported that the couple stole premiums totaling $312,783 from 2007 to 2016.
“Policyholders trusted that they would be covered during a difficult time and they were exploited. I commend the investigators of the Division of Insurance Fraud Investigation for their diligence in helping to bring justice to these families,” DOI Commissioner Nancy G. Atkins said.
