LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)- To celebrate National Literacy Month in September, McDonald's locations across the country are placing books in their signature Happy Meals.

McDonald's says the books are being placed in Happy Meals until September 18.

McDonald's leaders say since the start of the program in 2013, they have supplied 54 million Happy Meal Books to children.

In celebration of its 200th anniversary, HarperCollins Publishers, one of the leading publishers of children’s books, are placing a collection of four Happy Meal-sized books featuring popular titles. The books include; “Pete the Cat’s Got Class” by James Dean, “Amelia Bedelia’s First Day of School” by Herman Parish, “Just A School Project” by Mercer Mayer and “If You Take a Mouse to School” by Laura Numeroff. Books are available in English and, in select restaurants, in Spanish.

Some central Kentucky schools are participating in programs to hand out the books to promote literacy in the city including Broadhead Elementary in Rockcastle County and Rosenwald Dunbar Elementary in Nicholasville.
