Richmond birthing center to accept breast milk donations needed for ill babies

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) – Nurturing Birth and Wellness in Richmond is partnering with an Indiana milk bank to create a place where women can donate much-needed breast milk.

The birthing center is teaming with Indianapolis-based nonprofit The Milk Bank to provide an accessible drop-off location for women who are able to donate breast milk. The donated milk will be sent to infants in hospital neonatal intensive care units.

Mothers interested in donating can set up a phone consultation. After the phone call, women can complete a written questionnaire and blood draw. There will be a celebratory grand opening to the public 10 a.m. May 18 at Nurturing Birth and Wellness at 322 West Water St., Suite C.

“The Milk Bank hopes to continue forging partnerships with organizations throughout the Midwest to make the process of human milk donation easier for donor moms and families, while also helping to support breastfeed in local communities,” Janice O’Rourke, Executive Director of The Milk Bank said.

The nonprofit says this milk depot will be the fifth in Kentucky, and it will help to make the donation process more convenient. Human breast milk provides nutrition and health benefits to at-risk babies.

You can contact the Milk Bank at (317) 536-1670 for donation opportunities.
