FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - First responders and school officials gathered at Lakeview Park in Frankfort on Thursday afternoon working together to prepare for possible emergency situations.

The group conducted training for three scenarios involving a school bus.

The training included a mass causality bus crash, a hostage situation, and a school bus fire. All the participants say they hoped by practicing these scenarios now they can keep children safer during the school year.

"And all this is designed number one to make sure that when this happens, we're all trained to handle that but secondly and most importantly is to make sure all of our children are safe in Franklin County as they start back to school," said Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton.

The school year begins next Thursday for Franklin County Schools.
