Overnight shooting near UK's campus becomes Lexington's third homicide of 2016

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington Police are now investigating the city's third homicide of the new year following a shooting near University of Kentucky's campus.

The Fayette County coroner say Caleb Hallett, 18, was pronounced dead at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital shortly after being shot on University Avenue Saturday morning.

Around 3 a.m., investigators say two masked men, dressed all in black, walked up to a parked car and began shooting at Hallett and another person sitting inside a vehicle. After shooting into the car, police believe the two suspects took off in the direction of Nicholasville Road.

Police say both Hallett and the second person were injured in the shooting. They say the second person was shot in the hand, but is expected to be okay. As for Hallett, police didn't indicate where he was shot, but say he had to be rushed to UK Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Shortly after being treated, medical officials say Hallett died from his injuries.

At this time, no arrests have been made. Police say they're still reviewing evidence as the shooting remains under investigation.
