WHITLEY CO., Ky. (WKYT) - It's a small community in Whitley County. Emlyn sits just south of Williamsburg and is made up by just a few streets.
Friday, people who live there are on alert. The sheriff says his office is investigating three recent reports of someone trying to lure children into a SUV. All reports were in Emlyn.
"You don't ever think it happens in your own backyard," Jerrica Moses, who lives in Emlyn, said.
Over a number of weeks, the sheriff's department has been getting reports of a dark-colored SUV following children. The department has now turned took to Facebook to warn parents.
"It was really scary to see it just because I've lived here almost 30 years and we've never had anything like this happen," Moses said.
There's a lot of unknowns, so there's not much Sheriff Colan Harrell can tell WKYT.
Sheriff Colan Harrell said, "An 11-year-old girl had been followed while she was on her dirt bike by a dark-colored SUV, a Ford. She had gone into her driveway. She was scared."
The sheriff said these reports aren't something he's used to hearing from this community and he's concerned by it.
"It sure does," he said. "If it doesn't worry you, there's something wrong with you. We have a concern with it. We have a worry with it. One is too many."
As the department investigates, neighbors are keeping watch.
"Anybody in the area, I definitely shared the post and tagged them so they'll be aware, too," Moses said.
She went on to say she hopes the Facebook post serves as a deterrent.
"I hope they don't come back. I'm also hoping it's some kind of misunderstanding."
Deputies are hoping to better identify the SUV.
