Police: Russell Springs child accidentally hit by mother's vehicle while backing out

RUSSELL SPRINGS, Ky. (WKYT) - Russell Springs police say a child was airlifted to a hospital after the mother accidentally struck the boy with her vehicle while driving in reverse.

Police say the 4-year-old boy went outside without his mother knowing while she was warming up the vehicle. As the mother was backing up closer to her apartment building, she hit her son.

"It's a traumatic event for all first responders," Russell Springs Police Chief Joseph Irvin. "It is a terrible thing to go through. We feel the pain of those involved."

The child was taken to UK Hospital. He was alert, but he was seriously injured.
