Police have person of interest in Somerset murder

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Police in southern Kentucky who are investigating the murder of a woman on a church property are asking people to be patient and to be aware of the things they post on social media.

Someone killed Carolyn New last Thursday afternoon as she cleaned an activity center at her church, Denham Street Baptist in Somerset. Police have not made any arrests in the case, but they have identified a person of interest in the case.

On Wednesday afternoon, investigators announced they are trying to find 41-year-old Dwight Mitchell Bell. They believe he may be in the Indianapolis-area. Police want to question Bell about New's murder.

Investigators say they have had to deal with rumors and untruths on social media. One of those rumors was that officers had made an arrest. Police say it is a solvable case and the investigation is pointing them in the right direction. However, they want the public to make sure the information they are sharing in the case comes from police. Investigators are worried false social media posts could spread incorrect information that the family of the victim might see.

Police say officers from the major crimes task force continue to work on the investigation.
