LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Republican State Representative Robert Benvenuti, of Lexington, will not run for re-election this year, according to a letter obtained by Spectrum News' Pure Politics on Friday.

Benvenuti says he made the decision to spend more time with his family. He has represented the 88th House District, which covers the southwest portion of Fayette County since 2012.

Two Democrats, Josh Mers and Cherlynn Stevenson, both of Lexington, have filed to run for the seat.

No Republicans have filed yet. The filing deadline is Tuesday.
