Robbery suspect's case waived to grand jury this morning

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Anwar Ricketts stood in front of a judge earlier this morning for a preliminary hearing, and his case waived to a grand jury.

Ricketts, 18, is charged in connection with a robbery that occurred at the Minit Mart on Town Centre Drive April 3. Ricketts is charged with first degree robbery.

In court, the defense asked if the judge would reexamine Ricketts’s bond, which is currently set at $25,000.

"It was an armed robbery and that Anwar entered the business and brandished a revolver and demanded money. I find that very offensive. Somebody's just trying to do their job as a store clerk and somebody comes in and sticks a gun in their face, so I am going to leave the bond the same,” Fayette County District Court Judge Megan Lake Thornton said.

According to Ricketts’s arrest citation, police believe a getaway driver was waiting the night of the robbery.

Hours later 21-year-old Christian Cubert was found shot outside an apartment complex on Devonport Drive. He later died at UK hospital.

Cubert was likely the getaway driver, according to police. They also believe he was shot while inside the car.

Ricketts’s fingerprint was found on the car, according to his citation.

Police arrested 18-year-old Malik Nelson for the murder of Cubert, and he is currently in jail on a $1 million bond.

After this morning’s court hearing the defense declined to comment on the case.
