For some, the space under the tree will be empty.
"There are a lot of families that struggle this time of year. You have a lot more bills because of cold weather...so we want to make sure that the children are able to get toys," says Sherri Barnett, Manager of Grateful Threadz Consignment.
Santa Day is a yearly day of giving in Mt. Vernon, and will be held on December 1 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Hosted by Grateful Threadz Consignment, it tries to take some of the stress off low-income families during the holidays.
"It's so cool to watch kids come in and sit in Santa's lap, and they get their toy, and those smiles are worth it all," says Barnett. "Without our donors we wouldn't be able to do this, and we really appreciate that."
The store is currently accepting donations from the community.
Barnett says many families struggle with food insecurity in a community that has limited resources.
But the donation of a single toy can mean a Christmas miracle for a family in need.
"I don't think there is any better feeling that knowing you we're able to help a child with that," says Barnett.
Grateful Threadz is also accepting food and clothing donations this holiday season. They are located at 3095 Richmond Street in Mount Vernon.
