Kentucky school employees removed following investigation into abuse involving special-needs student

LINCOLN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Two Lincoln County Schools employees have been terminated, and a third reassigned, as a result of an investigation into allegations of abuse involving a special-needs student.

A criminal summons for teacher Rebecca Spurlock said teacher's aide Janie Hasty punched the student, who is autistic and non-verbal. Officials say Hasty and another aide, Teresa Sparkman, then twisted the student's arm, pulled him off the floor and shoved him. The documents say Spurlock did nothing to intervene.

The incident in question reportedly occurred Jan. 3 at Lincoln County High School in a special education class.

Hasty and Sparkman have each been terminated from their positions with the Lincoln County School District effective immediately.

Spurlock has been reassigned to a position at the Student Support Center for the remainder of the school year.
