Grimes posted a picture on Derby Day that appears to show her riding in the back of a State Police vehicle. In the tweet, she thanked her police escort for the ride to Churchill Downs and to all law enforcement for keeping everyone safe. The speedometer in the photo shows the vehicle going nearly 100 miles an hour.
According to WDRB, a state police spokesman told them they are investigating the circumstance of the photo to determine if there is an explanation for the excessive speeding.
Secretary Grimes's Office issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It must be a slow news day when folks are trying to use four-days-old tweets to manufacture a story. The photo was put up by staff to thank law enforcement. The ridiculous speculation surrounding the photo is unwarranted and led to staff removing the tweet. It reduces the selfless and amazing work of all law enforcement to keep people safe over Derby weekend. "
It went on to say Secretary Grimes continues to extend her gratitude to all those in uniform that ensured a successful and safe Derby weekend.
