FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Sen. Mitch McConnell says he is definitely running for re-election in 2020, but he says his first priority is making sure Governor Matt Bevin wins re-election in 2019.
McConnell spoke with reporters Friday in Frankfort after the Republicans maintained control of the U.S. Senate. The majority leader will have a divided Congress, as Democrats won the U.S. House.
The Republican said he has already laid the groundwork for his 2020 campaign, saying Kentucky House Majority Leader Jonathan Shell, who was defeated in the May primary, will be a big part of his re-election campaign.
McConnell said he would do everything he can to get Matt Bevin a second term in office, as he is expected to face a tough re-election campaign with Democratic political rival Andy Beshear already announcing he will run for office.
