CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) – The Laurel County Sheriff says an investigation is underway after a shooting in the Corbin AMVETS parking lot off US 25 early Saturday morning.

According to the Sheriff, at about 12:20 a.m., an argument between two men turned physical. During the scuffle, William Helton reportedly fired a shot from a Derringer handgun, hitting Donnie Mabe, 69.

The sheriff says Mabe walked into Baptist Healthcare Hospital after being shot and was then taken to UK Hospital and admitted to the ICU.

Helton reportedly called 911, saying he thought he shot someone.

The sheriff’s office says the case will be presented to the grand jury.
