Thousands attend 8th annual Beer Cheese Festival in Winchester
The state of Kentucky is known for many things beginning with the letter "B." Basketball, bourbon, burgoo but today in Winchester they're celebrating a different "B" - beer cheese.
For many the spread known as beer cheese is a delicious snack, but did you know it was first made in Clark County?
To celebrate the treat, nearly 20,000 are in on main street, or Beer Cheese Boulevard, in downtown Winchester for the 8th annual Beer Cheese Festival.
For $5 festival-goers sample and vote for their favorite beer cheese from ten vendors. The beer cheese with the most votes wins the People's Choice Award.
But why is beer cheese so popular in the Bluegrass State?
"That's a good question, I'm not sure I know the answer," Main Street of Winchester board president Graham Johns. "It's really good for one thing and it goes well with beer!"
Organizers say they have already begun planning for next year's festival which will once again fall on the 2nd Saturday in June.
Vendors say most recipes for beer cheese have four main ingredients; beer, cheese, cayenne pepper and garlic.
