UK eyes mixed-use retail, parking garage on campus north end

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The University of Kentucky is looking for a business developer to bring mixed-use retail and parking to a prime spot near the north end of its campus.

The Jersey Street lot is located between Limestone and South Upper Streets. Currently, there are about 150 spots in the parking lot that are utilized by UK employees and surrounding retailers.

New nearby residence halls have doubled the number of students living on the north end of campus.

The move comes as retailer Target is opening smaller, urban-focused stores around college campuses.

A 17,000 square-foot Target will open this summer near the University of Cincinnati. Other campus-area Targets are set to open around the same time at N.C. State University and the universities of Florida, North Carolina, and Texas. The smaller-format Target stores focus on apparel, home goods, electronics, convenient food, and other essentials.

A Target spokesman wouldn't confirm whether a similar store near the UK campus is in the works.
