LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Kentucky football player spent Sunday night in jail after he was accused of assaulting a woman.
Zy'aire Hughes, 21, appeared in court this morning. His attorney was in and out of the court room in about a minute and a half. In that time, the UK sophomore was released to his mother but with conditions.
Police arrested Hughes at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. His arrest citation says Hughes intentionally caused physical harm to a female aquaintance.
He was arraigned Monday afternoon on fourth-degree assault charges.
The sophomore wide receiver has had no prior criminal history. The terms of the release by Judge T. Bruce Bell include not getting in contact with the alleged victim in any way.
In response to the arrest, Coach Mark Stoops released a statement.
"We're in the process of gathering information," Stoops said. "Proper behavior is an expectation of our program, and we will address this as the facts are determined."
Hughes will be back in court on December 12 for his preliminary hearing. We do not know at this time if he will be playing in the Citrus Bowl on January 1.
