The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a $2.3 million grant for the Transit Authority of Lexington so the city can purchase new electric buses.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao made the announcement during a Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce event Friday.
Lexington received a portion of the department's allocation of more than $84 million throughout the U.S. as a part of its Low- or No-Emission Grant Program.
LexTran operates some electric buses, and the grant money will help increase the city's fleet. The bus system runs 31 routes throughout the city.
