UPDATE | Coroner identifies Lexington shooting victim
Lexington Police are investigating a deadly shooting in a Lexington neighborhood.
It happened around 6 p.m. Thursday off Faulkner Avenue, near Russell Cave Road.
Police say three people were in an SUV, when one person shot one of the other people in the vehicle then ran off.
De'Ontai Jarrell Bates, 25, was shot in the chest and was taken to UK Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died.
WKYT learned the victim has a young child. The child's mother didn’t want to go on camera, but told us, “I really loved him. He will never be forgotten and I'm going to make sure our daughter knows all about him. He got his wings now and heaven couldn't wait for him," she said.
Police interviewed the third person from the SUV. It's still unclear what led up to the shooting. They say none of the people in that SUV lived in the Faulkner Avenue area.
Police say the suspect is described as a black man, in his 20s, who was wearing a red toboggan hat and dark clothing at the time of the shooting.
